Only Connect viewers believe Victoria Coren Mitchell was ‘trolling’ them with a trendy item.
Victoria, who just delivered a baby girl, 51, with husband David Mitchell, 49, and her headgear on Monday night left BBC Two viewers perplexed.
The professional poker player decided to spice things up by donning a wide-brimmed crimson hat that would look right at home on the mother-of-the-bride at a wedding.
Some viewers believe Victoria purposefully donned the eye-catching clothing to annoy individuals who have previously criticised her looks.
As one X, formerly known as Twitter, user put it: ‘Surprised how many people are wondering why VCM was wearing a hat on #onlyconnect, when the answer – as always – was that it was purely to troll the people who only watch the show to complain about VCM wearing a hat.’
Others, however, were perplexed, with a viewer asking: ‘Ok so why was Victoria Coren Mitchell wearing the hat? I tried very hard to concentrate and see the in joke to explain it but missed it. Anybody? #onlyconnect.’

‘Missed the beginning. What’s with the hat?’ another shared, while a third added: ‘Did I miss the reason for the hat? #OnlyConnect.’
Victoria has been hosting Only Connect since 2008, and she was recently upset when the New York Times debuted their latest game, which she said was identical to her show.
After puzzles editor Wyna Lui shared her new conception, Connections, on X, Victoria responded: ‘Do you know this has been a TV show in the UK since 2008?! It’s so similar I guess you must do?

No, can’t be doing with the hat – it’s too big and the pink colour doesn’t go with the blue dress. #onlyconnect

Victoria revealed her second kid, June Violet, with a tongue-in-cheek X message in November, after keeping her pregnancy a secret.
After sharing what looked like a Halloween outfit, she wrote the following day: ‘Many people are assuming my tweet yesterday was a Halloween costume. Not at all; last week I had a baby and nothing currently fits me except cloaks.’
Victoria and David, the star of Peep Show, have been together for over 20 years, having met in 2007 when comedian David Baddiel played matchmaker.

Victoria once revealed to Radio Times: ‘[Baddiel] specifically said to me, “There’s David Mitchell over there, I think you should probably marry him, I’ll get the ball rolling by introducing you”.’
‘I thought that was ridiculous but, a couple of hours later, I thought I probably would marry him.’
It wasn’t all plain sailing, however, as Victoria and David enjoyed a brief relationship before divorcing, only to renew their affair in 2010.
They married two years later, with David’s friend and regular professional colleague Robert Webb serving as best man, and had their first child, Barbara, in 2015.
Victoria has been in series such as 8 Out of 10 Cats and Would I Lie To You, in addition to Only Connect, while David is most recognised for his roles in Peep Show, Would I Lie To You, and That Mitchell and Webb Look.
Only Connect continues on Monday on BBC Two and iPlayer at 8pm.
