ITV has another 9pm drama blockbuster on its hands in the form of Payback, a new criminal thriller that debuted last week.
The drama, executive produced by Jed Mercurio, follows an accountant who is thrust into a world she is unprepared for when a violent attack on her spouse leaves her abruptly widowed.
With a stellar cast and a fast-paced plot, the programme is sure to have us all on the edge of our seats for the next several weeks.
But what exactly is Payback about, who is involved, and how long will it last?
We have all the information you require…
What is Payback about?
Payback tells the story of accountant Lexie Noble, whose comfortable family life in the Edinburgh suburbs is shattered when she is widowed following a sudden knife attack.
She has been unaware her husband, Jared, was involved in money laundering for local crime lord Cal Morris – but as a partner in his business she is forced into working for him, even as the police continue to close in on his operations.
Lexie’s life and the lives of her loved ones are then jeopardised as the police increasingly rely on her to bring Morris to justice.
Will she make it through the scary world of financial crime? You’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
Who is in the cast of Payback?
Morven Christie, who plays Lexie Noble, is among the recognised faces in the cast.
The Scottish-born actress has acted in a number of television shows, including Grantchester, in which she portrayed Amanda Kendall, the BBC One thriller The Replacement, and The A Word, in which she played Alison Hughes.
Viewers may remember her from The Bay, where she played DS/DC Lisa Armstrong for the first two seasons.
Scottish actor Peter Mullan, whose credits include The Fixer, Westworld, The Trial of Tony Blair, Top of the Lake, and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, joins her in the cast.
On the big screen, he’s also appeared in Trainspotting, Children of Men, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (as Corban Yaxley), and Ken Loach’s My Name Is Joe, for which he received the best actor prize at Cannes in 1998.
Other cast members include Thoren Ferguson as Lexie’s husband Jared, as well as Prasanna Puwanarajah (The Crown), Steven Mackintosh (Luther, Wanderlust), Julie Graham and Derek Riddell.
