Piers Morgan expressed relief that he did not apologise to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when it was ‘demanded.’
The 57-year-old TV star has been an ardent opponent of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, which led to his departure from Good Morning Britain.
Morgan backed Jeremy Clarkson’s apologies to the Prince and the Suits actress during Tuesday’s episode of his Uncensored show after his current piece in The Sun was met with tremendous backlash.
‘Why should the Royal family apologise when you consider what happened to Jeremy Clarkson?’ he asked during his opening speech.
‘He published, as he admits, a dumb and inflammatory newspaper commentary that went too far. As he now admits, the fury was anticipated and, frankly, warranted.’
Following the outrage, the Clarkson’s Farm vocalist returned to social media on Monday to say that in an email delivered on Christmas Day, he directly apologised to Meghan and Harry.
‘They wouldn’t accept it. She wouldn’t accept it. She would just use it as an excuse to go even harder. It’s what they do. They are the victims, always. Perennial victims. So I refused and I left and I’m very happy about that otherwise I wouldn’t be here doing the show if I hadn’t done that.’
‘On December 25, 2022, Mr Clarkson wrote solely to Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex,’ a spokeswoman for the married pair said in a new statement.
‘The contents of this correspondence were marked Private and Confidential.’
They continued: ‘While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories, and misogyny.
‘Unless each of his other pieces were also written “in a hurry”, as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste, but rather a series of articles shared in hate.’
Piers Morgan Uncensored airs weekdays at 8pm on TalkTV.
