Richard Hammond admitted that he thought ‘mate’ James May ‘was dead’ following his horrific 75mph crash into a wall.
The 59-year-old was trying to reach the highest speed possible in a one-way tunnel in Norway, attempting to beat the scores of Jeremy Clarkson and Richard, when he plummeted into a wall.
After exiting his smashed-up car, James was taken to hospital and was fortunately given the all-clear by medics, resuming his Nordic adventures in the upcoming The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick.
During an interview on Tuesday’s The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, presenter Richard recalled the terrifying moment when he feared for his co-star’s life.
‘He really wanted to win,’ he told radio host Chris.
‘But he came through, we were genuinely concerned and I thought my mate was dead.’
Addressing the moment he saw the crashed vehicle, he continued: ‘We ran up that tunnel thinking and then saw the car and thought “oh God!”‘
Chris later asked what happened when Richard and Jeremy realised that he was ‘fine,’ Richard joked that they just ‘left him in the hospital and carried on.’
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the accident, the motorhead described the accident as the ‘worst car crash,’ he’s ever been in.
‘When I was a youth I was in quite a few car crashes that other people had where I was just a passenger,’ he said.
‘There was one roll-over in the field, one quite big collision and another roll-over on a country lane, but I was never driving. It was always some stupid mate of mine who’d overdone it.
‘So that was the biggest one I’ve ever had. But it wasn’t that bad. To be honest, It was just a bit of a bang.’
