The compelling Channel 4 series The Light in the Hall ultimately uncovered the exact circumstances of Ela Roberts’ (Ella Peel) murder after explosive allegations and a shocking fire.
The crime thriller opened with a bereaved mother, Sharon Roberts (Joanna Scanlan), struggling to accept the release of her daughter’s killer, Joe Pritchard (Iwan Rheon).
After Ela went missing 18 years ago, the calm gardener confessed to her murder but couldn’t remember what happened or where her body lay owing to amnesia.
Sharon is determined to finally say goodbye to Ela and will go to any length to obtain answers from Joe, while dogged journalist Cat Donato (Alexandra Roach) reinvestigates the case as well.
As old scars are reopened, it appears that the crime is not what it appears, with Ela’s secret girlfriend Izzy (Hannah Daniel) accidently killing Ela during a struggle.
Nina (Lisa Palfrey), her mother and local politician, strikes a deal with Joe’s abusive father Wyn (Ifan Huw Dafydd), and they cover Ela’s body and let Joe take the blame.

But not before plenty of twists, turns, and drama, including a sequence in which Joe runs into a blazing house to prevent Sharon from being devoured by flames.
After the trauma, and with the truth ultimately revealed, Sharon can finally lay Ela to rest, while Joe’s name is cleared, and the duo meets up for coffee in the concluding scenes.
What does this signify for their relationship after the six-part series is over? Regina Moriarty, the creator of The Light in the Hall, explained everything.
She said: ‘I feel that even though it was a small moment, anything bigger than that would have felt a bit phony and it took so much for them to get to that one small moment.
‘I suppose in my imagination, I like to think that they probably parted ways with some sort of sense of resolution or the beginning of some healing process happening, but I don’t think they’ll be hanging out.
‘It was quite a lot for them to get to that point. But I imagine them probably going off in their separate own ways.’
The Light in the Hall is available to stream on All4.
