On Wednesday night, The One Show was thrown into disarray when its guest stars were unable to join them on the sofa because they were caught in a lift.
The show’s hosts, Ronan Keating and Alex Jones, were set to welcome Stephen Fry, 66, and Sheridan Smith, 42, to discuss their next projects.
They couldn’t get them on the set because they were caught in an elevator, which was the ultimate live TV gaffe.
Viewers were perplexed when the duo introduced video clip after video clip rather than welcome their listed guests – and the presenters ultimately explained why.
Alex said: ‘We are having a night here.
‘Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith are due on this sofa. Obviously it’s a live programme – they are stuck in the lift.’
As Ronan descended into giggles beside her, she added: ‘For the time being we will go on to a film.’
Ronan added: ‘And they’re fine! They’re absolutely fine. Hopefully they’ll be here before the end of the show.’
They then shared another video of Spencer Matthews hiking in the woods.
However, by the time the Spencer footage concluded and the camera returned to Alex and Ronan, they announced that they had successfully gotten the stars out of the elevator.
Stephen joked ‘Santa’s sleigh ride got a little stuck. I think the reindeer were drunk.’
The programme must go on, so the hosts swiftly changed the subject to Stephen’s recent sad accident, which resulted in a horribly damaged leg.
Stephen had been speaking at an event at London’s O2 arena when he fell off stage ‘on to hard concrete ‘six feet on to hard concrete.’
He fractured his leg in two places and shattered his pelvis, but he’s on the mend owing to medicine and ‘particularly superb rehabilitation,’ and he’ll get his last X-Ray this week.
The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
