The chaperones escorting Ryan (Rhys Connah) to visit Tommy (James Norton) in prison are revealed in Happy Valley season 3 episode 2.
Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) was taken aback when her officer friend revealed that it was her sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and her partner Neil (Con O’Neill).
Rather than confronting the trio, Catherine decided to take the day off and follow them up to Sheffield prison, ambushing Clare at a cafe after trying to coax the truth out of her.
Meanwhile, Joanna Hepworth (Mollie Winnard) plots against her abusive husband Rob Hepworth (Mark Stanley), and drug trafficking pharmacist Faisal (Amit Shah) is striving to keep up with the Joneses – and failing to outwit the gangster bending his arm.
Will Joanna follow through with her plan to kill her abusive husband Rob?
In episode 1, Joanna’s husband Rob contacted the police after physically beating her and discovering prescription pills on her.
Catherine took her in, mostly to provide her with women’s support services, but Joanna refused any assistance since she did not want to leave her two girls.
Joanna had planned to abandon Rob after Faisal agreed to buy her a flat, but now that thugs have taken all of his profits, that is no longer an option.
Joanna tells Faisal she’s plotting a plan to murder Rob, feeling it’s her only way out, and asks the pharmacist for a lethal dose of Ketamine during a private meeting in a cafe.
What does Tommy’s phone message mean?
Tommy, who’s clearly asserted his dominance in prison, managed to get a tiny phone smuggled in, while other inmates caused a distraction in the canteen.
Back in his cell, Tommy turns the mobile and sees this message: ‘Ricos Newsagents Gr8 presents 4 Ryan.’

A wide grin crosses his face, and knowing Tommy and his diabolical plotting, it’s unlikely to be something as harmless as ‘presents’ for his son.
Some followers believe he is trying to flee and take Ryan to Spain; might this mysterious phrase be a code or communication connected to the heinous plan?
Is Richard putting himself in danger investigating the Kneževićs?
Catherine’s ex-husband, local journalist Richard Cawood (Derek Riddell), has been approached by a national newspaper journalist to collaborate on a big story exposing rural crime and gangs.
The Kneevis, Yorkshire’s counterpart to the mafia, are of particular interest, as Catherine believes they are involved in the death of a girl who fell from a dangerous window.
Catherine claims that the Kneevis obtain rich government contracts for housing estates by corruption or by misrepresenting about the quality of their goods, but then fit buildings with harmful materials.
Furthermore, Catherine and Richard assume Darius Kneevi is connected to Gary Gaggowski’s death, but she adds, ‘You’ll never nail it on him. He’s far too astute.’
Richard’s curiosity is sparked, and he begins studying the family more, but not before Catherine tells him that they are ‘very dangerous.’
Why are Clare and Neil taking Ryan to visit Tommy in prison?
The announcement that Clare and Neil are accompanying Ryan to see his father in prison was the episode’s biggest surprise.
Catherine learns that this has been going on for a year, and the threesome has visited Tommy four times in that period.
Their next visit is scheduled for the following Saturday, when Catherine is usually at work and they can use Ryan’s football game as cover, but she has other plans for the weekend.
Instead, she takes the day off and follows them, confirming the accuracy of the information. But why is Clare doing this behind her sister’s back, and why does Ryan want to be with his psychopathic father?
Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 10pm on BBC One.
