After getting unmasked on Sunday night’s episode of The Masked Singer, Chris Kamara laughed at his own expense and had a good time.
The football expert and presenter, who is 65 years old and was dressed as the Ghost, was the first celebrity to be unmasked on the new series of ITV1’s reality singing contest. He was revealed to be hiding behind the mask.
Chis took the stage and sang “Save the Last Dance for Me” by The Drifters. While doing so, he put on a Scottish accent in order to fool the judges Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and Jonathan Ross into thinking he was someone else. Chis’s performance helped him win the competition.
As a direct consequence of this, people were under the impression that someone like Dr. Alex George or Love Island host Iain Sterling was hiding behind the guise.
After making an appearance on the show, Chris made fun of his phoney accent while also joking that he would lose his brand new MBE.
‘They have just asked me for the MBE back 🙈 after that singing in a Scottish accent 🤣😂 🤣,’ he tweeted.
Alongside Queen guitarist Brian May, who received a knighthood, and actor Stephen Graham, who earned an OBE, Chris was given an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list for his services to football, anti-racism, and charity. Brian May also received an honour for his work with Queen.
This comes after he recently opened up about the challenges he faces as a result of the speech impairment known as apraxia.
After being booted out of The Masked Singer on Sunday, Chris said he kept his role in the show a secret to surprise his family, adding: ‘I can’t wait to see their reactions.
‘My grandkids, we’ll sit around together and they’ll have no idea. They love this show. They just sing ‘take it off’ and grandad’s going to turn around.’
Asked whether he has ever watched the show before, Chris revealed: ‘Yes it’s a fan favourite in our house. My grandkids love the characters and we love to play along.
‘I can’t say I’m particularly good with my guesses though.’
Next Saturday, the remaining characters – Fawn, Jacket Potato, Piece of Cake, Pigeon, Rhino and Rubbish – will be taking to the stage to sing in disguise and try to stump the panel and viewers.
