Diane Keaton, a Hollywood celebrity, has admitted that she was not a ‘Belieber’ before starring in Justin Bieber’s Ghost music video – but she is overjoyed that she did.
Keaton, 77, startled us all when she featured as a devastated widow and grandma in the chart-topper back in 2021, in a narrative that saw her character attempting to move on from her husband’s death.
Fans were overjoyed to see her in the three-and-a-half-minute film, with one joke suggesting that hiring Keaton was Bieber’s “true purpose.”
The Annie Hall Oscar winner is now promoting her next film Book Club: The Next Chapter and spoke with Metro.co.uk about her experience.
When asked about the lovely surprise, she responded: ‘Are you kidding? I couldn’t believe it. This was like one of those things that happens [and] you’re going, “I’m what?”.’
‘And of course, it was so much fun, it couldn’t have been more fun. I can’t believe it. I still can’t believe it,’ she admitted.
However, the Something’s Gotta Give actress also confessed that she ‘didn’t even know’ the Peaches singer or his songs before to filming.
‘No, I hadn’t been a fan,’ she told Metro.co.uk.
‘I mean, I didn’t even know him. I knew the music a little and I liked the music, but I wasn’t a fan exactly – so you know, I don’t have music pouring in my ears all the time.
‘I don’t know why me, I still don’t understand. I don’t know how, but I loved it,’ she said, before generously adding: ‘I wish you could have been there!’
So do we.
After the incident, Keaton called her appearance in the music video “an honour” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is where she and Bieber first met in 2015, anticipating their unusual Ghost match.
The screen legend did, in fact, refer to herself as a ‘Belieber’ at the time, fawning over a topless photo of the ‘beautiful’ singer before becoming slightly horrified when he appeared to surprise her.
That seemed to be the end of their relationship until the 29-year-old approached Keaton and asked her to star in his song video.
In an interview ahead of the premiere of her latest picture, the actress refused to accept the designation of “screen icon,” despite the classic status of several of her films, like The Godfather and Father of the Bride, and the durability of her 50-year career.
‘I’ll not get carried away with that. It’s not true, I am not a screen icon, but I have had the pleasure of acting in movies,’ she modestly responded.
Keaton reprises her role as Diane (thats a bit easy) in Book Club: The Next Chapter, starring Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as women who connected over 40 years through their monthly sessions.
In the sequel to the 2018 film, the friends travel to Italy for the fun ladies’ trip they never had.
Book Club: The Next Chapter is out in cinemas on Friday, May 12.
