James Gunn has admitted that he won’t be able to please everyone in his position as DC Studios CEO as rumours about the franchise’s future swirl.
The filmmaker and actor, 56, best known for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, became CEO and co-chair of DC in November.
The film studio has had its 2022 marred by controversy as major decisions were made with regards to the future of some of its franchises.
Most notable was the cancellation of upcoming (and now unfinished) Leslie Grace-starring Batgirl, production for which was shelved in August 2022.
And yesterday, it was speculated that Superman actor Henry Cavill – who recently left The Witcher series – would not be returning for Man of Steel 2.
In addition, rumours circled that Jason Momoa would no longer be appearing as Aquaman, while the planned Wonder Woman 3 has also reportedly been axed.

Taking to Twitter, Gunn didn’t address the rumours directly, but acknowledged that the future of DC Studios might not please everybody.
‘Some of [the rumours] true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, and some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.’
He continued: ‘Peter and I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told and in the audience itself.’
‘[We knew] there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.’
The rumours surfaced just weeks after Gunn was appointed as DC Studios co-chair alongside Peter Safran in a huge shake-up for the company.
Gunn acknowledged that, while he, Safran, and DC President David Zaslav will have to make tough decisions, the ends will justify the means.
‘The drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities and the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far.’
Gunn’s last film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, released its trailer last week – it promised an emotional ride for fans.
The Guardians director was fired by Marvel in 2018 after old tweets resurfaced online.
