Scream 6 is rumoured to have crossed the $100 million barrier at the US box office, indicating that horror fans can’t get enough of Ghostface.
The masked killers stalked Sam and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, across New York in the sixth installment of the slasher franchise, while also attempting to pick off their friend group.
Courteney Cox returned as the famous Gale Weathers, and Hayden Panettiere reprised her role as fan favourite Kirby Reed.
According to Variety, the film was set to surpass the $100 million mark in the United States on Thursday, and it could shortly surpass the 1996 original, which earned $103 million.
It was also the third film to reach this milestone, following the success of Scream 2 in 1997.
Scream 6 has earned $156 million worldwide since its March 10 debut and shows no signs of slowing down.
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have yet to announce a possible sequel, although given the film’s success, a seventh installment appears to be in the works.
Speaking ahead of the film’s release, they admitted that they had previously discussed a possible actor list.
‘We don’t know what Scream 7 would be yet, but we have a bunch of actors that we would just love to work with,’ Matt told us.
‘I think that’s one of the amazing things about these movies, they’re all ensembles,’ Tyler continued. ‘There’s such an opportunity to introduce new actors into the mix.
‘We’ve done it twice now and I can’t say enough about how much we love the “Core Four”, the returning cast in this one and then the new crop of actors that came in to play with us. The best people we know.
‘I hope that they all are hugely, hugely successful, because it’s so deserved.’
Following Kirby’s reappearance – after she was declared killed at the end of Scream 4 – they teased that others might follow suit.
‘Yes,’ Matt simply replied when asked if more characters could come back from the ‘dead’, as Tyler agreed: ‘That’s the fun and soapiness of these movies, it feels like…
‘Fans love and latch on to characters and there’s a character for everybody in these movies. I think anything is possible.’
Bring it on.
