Bargain Hunt is normally a fairly professional show, so fans were understandably perplexed when it looked that host Charlie Ross cursed during a frantic auction.
The antiques expert, presenter, and auctioneer is one of numerous presenters of the long-running show, in which two pairs of participants are challenged to acquire antiques from stores or a fair and then sell them for a profit at auction.
Charlie was in Nottinghamshire in the episode that aired on BBC on Friday, where specialists Nick Hall and Jonathan Pratt were on hand to assist the teams.
One of the teams were couple Sid and Steph, who decided to spend some of their money on a huge enamel sign that read: ‘Smoking strictly prohibited on any part of this premises.’
While it was rusted, they were assured it was a’very collectible’ item and opted to buy it.
They paid £155 for it after some haggling.
Throughout the conversation, Charlie and Nick were sceptical that the couple would recoup their investment, anticipating that it would resell for around £30.
Sid began to have second thoughts about his purchase just before the auction began, claiming that he made it on a whim.
There were instantly five bids on the sign, although they were ‘not substantial’.
Bidding began at £25, but things quickly escalated.
Charlie shouted, ‘fantastic,’ as additional offers were submitted.
‘With respect Sid,’ he added.
Charlie couldn’t contain his excitement as the bidding hit £100, and he seemed to use some colourful words.
While he said ‘Ohh Sid’, it did appear like he had to think on his feet after first appearing to exclaim ‘Oh sh…’, before saving himself.
Those watching at home were perplexed by what they had just heard.
‘Did they just say oh s*** on Bargain Hunt,’ one viewer posted on Twitter.
Despite the fact that the item only sold for £95, leaving Sid and Nancy with a £60 loss, they closed their auction with a total loss of £5.
Yet, with their opponents also failing to make a profit and ending up with a loss of £60, Sid and Steph were able to cross the finish line.
