Several former and current BBC Breakfast presenters have joined forces to commemorate the show’s 40th anniversary.
Tuesday’s broadcast honoured the 30-year anniversary of the show, which debuted as Breakfast Time on January 17, 1983.
Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, the show’s hosts today, reflected on what they were doing when the show originally aired.
‘I can remember what I was doing,’ she said.
‘I was getting up, getting ready for school, put the TV on and couldn’t believe the news was on television.’
Jon joked in response: ‘Because we’ve never had morning telly – telly started at lunchtime.’
Dan Walker, a Channel 5 host who announced his retirement from the show last year, lauded his ‘special’ prior crew on social media.
‘Happy 40th birthday to #BBCBreakfast It was a real privilege to sit on the famous sofa for 6 years,’ he penned.
‘It is a special programme, made by an brilliant, dedicated team and it continues to be an important show for the huge, loyal audience. Also… @carolkirkwood is the best.’
Speaking of Carol, the BBC weather presenter also shared a smiley snap with host Nina Warhurst and sports journalist John Watson.
She captioned the picture: ‘My day is made’
Nina tweeted: ‘Now the party’s started!’ @carolkirkwood in the house.
‘Happy 40th Birthday to the news programme little Nina dreamed of working on one day. It hasn’t disappointed. A joy to be a teeny part of this iconic trail through history.
‘Tune in for our knees-up @BBCBreakfast.’
The original show was recorded in Lime Grove Studios in west London, which also housed hit shows like Panorama and Doctor Who.
The Breakfast Time on-screen analogue clock was also back on Tuesday’s broadcast, and Kay was drinking from a retro-branded mug.
Former weatherman Francis Wilson and the ‘Green Goddess,’ health and fitness instructor Diana Moran, were among the special guests.
BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
