It has been reported that Buckingham Palace made an effort to ‘discredit’ the Netflix documentary series on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
From their earliest letters to each other to Meghan’s candid discussion of her struggles with depression and anxiety to the online harassment and media scrutiny they faced, the six-part documentary provided an intimate look at their life and marriage.
The former Suits star has accused the royal family of preventing her from seeking medical care while she was having suicidal thoughts and has also accused the Palace of leaking damaging information about them to the media.
Despite a disclaimer that appeared on air, the show caused controversy since it was claimed that the Palace was given the chance to speak but other members of the royal family were not approached.
A statement like “This is a first-hand account of Harry & Meghan’s story, delivered with never before seen personal archive” appeared at the beginning of the premiere episode. By August of 2022, all interviews would have been finished.
They said, “Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the information inside this series.”
Director Liz Garbus saw this as evidence that the series was being “discredited” because both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace had previously denied receiving this request for right of reply.
She remarked, ‘Buckingham Palace said that we didn’t reach out for comment [on the docuseries] when we did,’
‘They did it to discredit us,’ she said to Vanity Fair, “and by discrediting us, they can discredit the content of the show.”
‘We lived through some of those moments that were a little bit like Alice Through the Looking Glass,’ Garbus added, speaking about how being a part of the series immersed her into the allegations Harry and Meghan made about the palace.
She also addressed Jeremy Clarkson’s highly condemned piece, in which he ‘hated’ the Duchess of Sussex on a ‘cellular level’ and expressed a desire to see her paraded nude down the street as excrement was hurled at her.
‘That was an extreme example of the kind of coverage they’ve been getting. I certainly lived through it a bit,’ Garbus said.
Harry & Meghan is available to watch on Netflix.
