With only a few weeks until the Bafta TV Awards, another big awards event has been conducted to recognise the finest in the business in disciplines such as cosmetics, costume design, and visual effects.
The Bafta TV Craft Awards 2023 took place on Sunday, April 23, with former Great British Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc presenting the glittering event.
The top two winners ranged from dragon-filled fantasy to medical drama, with Game of Thrones precursor House of the Dragon and dark comedy This Is Going To Hurt each receiving three awards.
House of the Dragon, starring Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and Milly Alcock, earned honours for make-up and hair design, sound fiction and special effects, and visual and graphic effects.
This Is Going To Hurt, which starred Ben Whishaw as real-life doctor Adam Kay in a series based on his memoir of the same name, took home awards for written casting, editing, and best writer: drama, Adam’s first ever victory.
The coverage of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s state burial, which won for sound: factual and director: multi-camera, was another major winner of the night.
Huw Edwards, Kirsty Young, and David Dimbleby, who stepped out of retirement to offer commentary for the BBC on the day last September, provided commentary for the historic occasion.
Strictly Come Dancing received the award for entertainment craft team, while Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee received the award for writer: comedy.
The Tinder Swindler, Top Boy, The Essex Serpent, and Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story, as well as Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes, Children of the Taliban, and Bad Sisters, garnered honours during the presentation.
Meanwhile, Alison Barnett received the Television Craft Special Award for her pioneering role as one of the first female heads of production in the UK television business.
