We thought Meryl Streep’s performance in Only Murders In The Building would be classic, but the caravan has just increased our anticipation.
The award-winning actress, 73, was revealed in January to join season 3 of the Hulu mystery programme, with Selena Gomez, 30, Steve Martin, 77, and Martin Short, 72.
The ‘whodunnit’ show follows Mabel (Selena), Charles (Steve), and Oliver (Martin) as they try to investigate crimes at the Arconia, a luxury New York skyscraper.
After the closing shot of season 2 introduced us to new character Ben Glen, portrayed by Paul Rudd, the one and only Meryl is ready to join them on their travels.
We say ‘introduced,’ but Paul’s appearance on the programme was brief, since the season 3 teaser begins by reminding us of Ben’s death.
His character falls on stage, prompting Oliver to cry, ‘This actually happened again?!’ in shock.
Mabel then quips: ‘Well, you know, who are we without a homicide?’
She asks Charles if he’s down for another investigation, to which he eagerly says: ‘Yeah!’
The season 3 trailer really doesn’t give much away about Meryl’s role and she literally only says a few words – but she’s already stolen the show.
Following a montage of clips, the trailer cuts to a table read, where actors are sitting reading their scripts.
The star of Mamma Mia! is then presented, with a voiceover saying, ‘One of the best shows on television is back… with a surprise you never saw coming.’
‘Oh, it’s me!’, Meryl says excitedly, before bursting into laughter.
‘I’m sorry, it’s me, isn’t it?’
The 38-second ad concludes with a beaming Ben summarising how we all feel about the new episodes: ‘I’m overjoyed!’
Only Murders in the Building season 3 has yet to be released, but it is slated to arrive this summer.
Of course, Meryl isn’t the only star to appear in the award-winning programme.
Amy Schumer, Cara Delevingne, and Sting himself have all appeared as guest stars in the previous two seasons.
Furthermore, despite the fact that Marvel star Paul’s character met his demise early on, series co-creator John Hoffman has stated that Ben would still play an important role in the forthcoming episodes.
‘Paul Rudd, after making an auspicious entrance into the world of our show at the end of Season 2 as Ben Glenroy, is someone we clearly want to know more about and see in our upcoming Season 3 — as he is a clear source of many upcoming questions and, as ever with our show, many twists yet to come!’ read a statement shared with Variety.
We so need this!
Only Murders In The Building is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
