Suzy Eddie Izzard provoked outrage when she said that ring-wing comedians are “racist and sexist.”
The stand-up comedian and actor, who started her candidature to become the Labour MP for Sheffield Central in October last year, is still campaigning.
The 61-year-old, who has been using she/her pronouns since December 2020, just revealed the addition of her new name Suzy, claiming that she had desired to take this name since she was a child.
However, the actress stated in a new interview on Thursday that she will use Eddie and Suzy interchangeably and that she doesn’t mind whatever name or pronoun people use.
Suzy affirmed to Ian Collins on TalkTV that she will keep attempting to become an MP until she got in, after finishing second to councillor Abtisam Mohamed in Sheffield in 2022.
Suzy also want to maintain her interest in politics in addition to her successful stand-up career.
‘Comedy is a good weapon to puncture pomposity, it takes things down – it’s not a great weapon for building in politics.
‘Comedy has to be used as the light relief at the end of the paragraph, you need to say, ‘These are my positive ideas on life and the other team, well let me tell you the comedy about the other team.” That’s how it works.’
However, she added: ‘The actual comedy tool that I have developed does not really work, but it can get pretty dry in politics so the occasional light relief of pointing out things is, I think, [a weapon].
Asked by Collins if she agreed that stand-up comedy in general was ‘more Left than Right when it came to politics’, Suzy replied: ‘Yes, because right-wing stand-ups tend to be sexist and racist comedians who we thought would’ve gone away, but they’re still there.
‘And there are still some circuits where some people still don’t like people of different races and different sexes.’
Host Collins then pointed out: ‘But there’s bound to be some really good comics who just happen to vote Conservative.’
Suzy joked in response: ‘Yes probably. Do you have a list? I’m not sure.’
‘“Right-wing stand-ups tend to be sexist and racist” says left-wing comedian, Eddie Izzard, whilst 100% not reducing either group to a social stereotype,’ complained one fan.
Another argued: ‘Eddie Izzard’s claim that “right-wing comedians are sexist and racist” shows how out of touch he is. He’s like one of those old school comedians in the 80s complaining about this new ‘alternative comedy’.
Suzy, an actress, is also planning to bring her one-woman version of Great Expectations, in which she plays 19 distinct roles, from Broadway to the West End in May.
