Ted Lasso fans are tearing their hair out after Nick Mohammed hinted that another season of the hit show might be on the way.
The third season of the sports comedy-drama, which premiered earlier this year, concluded with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deciding to leave London and return to the United States to coach his son Henry’s football team.
While there was much speculation that this was the show’s final season, creator and star Jason never explicitly confirmed it, leaving many fans hoping it would return.
However, before the final episodes were released, he did say it was ‘the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell.
‘The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season Three—it’s flattering.’
However, stars such as Nick, who played kit man-turned-assistant coach Nathan Shelley, have hinted that this may not be the end.
A few months ago, he posted a photo in character with Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) with the caption “smells like potential,” along with an emoji with a zip over its mouth.
He’s now teased fans once more, this time with another set photo.
On Friday he posted a photo of him smirking at the camera and wrote: ‘One year to the day since Ted Lasso wrapped. And one year to the day that I accidentally posted this spoiler of Nate in AFC Richmond kit! Promise it won’t happen again on season 4- now wait’
Unsurprisingly his final comment sparked plenty of interest.
‘Season 4? ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!’ one fan commented.
‘I literally told my husband the other night how I’m still so sad about Ted Lasso being done. If this happens I’ll die with excitement,’ someone else shared.
Others attempted some bribery to get the inside scroop: ‘C’mon Nate, tell us it’s happening!!! I promise you a window table anywhere!!!!’
Others, however, realised it was all a ruse and begged him not to play with their feelings.
‘Sir, don’t toy with us like that! Also, please say it’s true!’ someone asked.
‘I need season 4 more than I need oxygen,’ was another desperate plea for more episodes.’
Many others questioned Nick’s trustworthiness and advised him not to ‘get his hopes up’ unless it was actually happening.
Even Hannah Waddingham, who played AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton, chimed in, but only with a series of emojis depicting people laughing with tears and others holding hearts.
Nick stated earlier this year that if a spin-off were to occur, he would be excited.
‘It’ll be quite emotional actually, because who knows whether it’s the very, very end or not or whether there’ll be more after a break,’ he told Esquire ahead of the finale.
‘I don’t know whether it comes back as a film. I’ve heard rumours of spinoffs… Who knows?’
However, he did say it might not be ‘quite right’ to solely focus on Nate because he had ‘been on such a journey over these three seasons already’.
At the same time, Jason hinted that a spin-off was not out of the question.
‘I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks to get to watch the further telling of these stories,’ he said when asked about the potential for a new series.
‘Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show has tried to do.
‘It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.’
Ted Lasso is streaming on Apple TV Plus.
