The first season of Wednesday on Netflix, which starred Jenna Ortega in the title character, was a huge success. Despite this, the show is reportedly in jeopardy of being cancelled.
The web series that follows the story of young Wednesday Addams became an instant sensation on the famous streaming site, even surpassing the viewership numbers of other popular shows such as Stranger Things.
The show debuted in November and was an instant hit, earning enormous points for the streaming giant and keeping people captivated from the very beginning to the very end.
However, despite becoming Netflix’s most watched English language programme in its first week – racking up more than 400 million hours – the concept has not yet been renewed for a second run on Netflix. This is despite the fact that it became Netflix’s most watched English language programme in its first week.
Jenna Ortega, who plays the major role in the film, and Tim Burton, who is directing it, have both been showered with accolades for their respective performances as the legendary character.
Following the tremendous success of the production, another round of action from the production most certainly appears imminent; yet, because nothing has been confirmed, the creation might look for a new home somewhere other than its original host.
Netflix will no doubt be keen to keep Wednesday on its books but due to the show being a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) product – it may not have any choice in the matter.
Last year, it was reported by Deadline that competitor streaming service Amazon and MGM signed an $8.5billion (£7.06bn) merger that potentially left the rights to Wednesday in their hands.
If that line of thought is to be followed, it could be Amazon Prime Video that showcases more Addams adventures next over a continuation of episodes on Netflix.
However, not all hope is lost for the giant as Netflix may propose a deal with Amazon in order to retain the hit series and according to the same report, the Jeff Bezoz founded outlet said it has no plans to make all MGM content exclusive to their site.
Despite question marks over the hosting site for the next installment, producers have supposedly confirmed they are in the process of looking for filming locations and seeking out writers for the new storylines.
Jenna Ortega also previously stated her hopes for Wednesday’s character development in future episodes of the show.
The 20-year-old said she would like to see Wednesday be bisexual and felt a relationship with her onscreen roommate Enid (Emma Myers) would ideal in a perfect world.
Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
