Rowetta has been dubbed a’savage’ following a heated exchange with a fellow musician on Good Morning Britain about concert regulations.
The X Factor contestant, who first appeared on the show in 2004, was clashing with folk-pop singer-songwriter Lucy May Walker, who had recently tweeted her ‘gig etiquette’ principles.
These ideas for better audience behaviour included not chatting during the play, not singing along when others aren’t, and waiting until the finish of a song before leaving the room.
Rowetta, 57, was not having it, advising Lucy that she should ‘stay in her bedroom’ and stream her singing instead of playing at live performances.
She also claimed that although Lucy had ‘a good voice’, she ‘obviously [hasn’t] got the personality’ for live shows and should be a teacher or prison officer instead if she liked rules so much, leading to GMB co-host Ranvir Singh to chime in with a shocked ‘Rowetta!’.
‘To have a set of rules for a gig when they’re paying, I think that’s really awful, honestly. You should be a teacher or a prison officer,’ she began.
‘If you don’t love being on stage with people watching you, stay in your bedroom, sing there and stream it to people who like your voice, because you have got a good voice, but you obviously haven’t got the personality.’
Rowetta slammed Lucy’s etiquette requirements after Lucy informed her that she did have the charisma and aptitude to connect with the audience.
‘What if someone wants to go to the toilet? “No, you’re not allowed to go to the toilet because I’ve got 30 people in the room!”’, which Lucy also dismissed.
Rowetta, who also performs with the Happy Mondays, remembered earlier smaller shows at working men’s clubs where she said there was ‘racist graffiti’ on the walls, posing a true ‘challenge’ to win over the audience.
‘With racist graffiti and an audience that don’t know me, I’ve walked in and then when you start to sing and they go “Oh!”, that’s incredible,’ she argued.
The Manchester-born singer, who has worked with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Gorillaz, also expressed her amazement that Lucy ‘didn’t like’ people singing along to her own material.
The debate and Rowetta’s aggressive performance, which included a lot of finger pointing, captivated viewers, but she divided them with her attitude and ideas.
‘Rowetta is SAVAGE,’ tweeted one fan, while another admitted: ‘So Team Rowetta.’
