Barbie’s creators revealed intentions to build a Mattel franchise to compete with the others, promising to bring more nostalgic toys to life on the big screen.
Following the success of Greta Gerwig’s pink extravaganza starring Margot Robbie, the corporation said a ‘Mattel cinematic universe’ starring some of Hollywood’s top A-listers was on the way.
In addition to completely new stories, the production firm hinted at possible Barbie sequels and the return of the blonde doll for new adventures.
‘Barbie, as a brand, has many different versions,’ Mattel’s new CEO Ynon Kreiz told Variety of the film’s future.
‘The product lines of Barbie is a very broad brand. In addition to the main Barbie figure, she has family, she has a lot of elements around in her universe.
‘It’s a very rich universe… It’s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.

‘At the outset, we’re not saying, “Okay, let’s think already about movie two and three.
“Let’s get the first one right and make that a success”. And if you do that, opportunities open up very quickly, once you establish the first movie as a successful representation of a franchise on the big screen.’
Aside from another attempt at instilling more Barbie fever, the company promised a recreation of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots featuring Fast & Furious actor Vin Diesel.
The A-lister is expected to star in the next feature picture based on the toy company’s tabletop game of duelling robots.
‘Vin is excited,’ Oscar-nominated producer Robbie Brenner said. We’re working on a script right now, and we’re all quite enthused about it.’
He also mentioned Tom Hanks appearing in a Major Matt Mason film and concluded that he would play the 1960s Mattel astronaut action figure who works and lives on the moon.
The announcement occurred after main actress Margot revealed the actual message of the Mattel film.
Greta said the much anticipated Barbie film was a celebration of “the real life Barbie.”
The Australian actress, who co-stars with Ryan Gosling as the film’s eponymous character, raved over the filmmaker, saying she was “everything” and “can do anything.”
Margot and Ryan’s Barbie and Ken were tracked as they left Barbie Land and travelled to the real world.
