Following a ‘awkward’ run-in at the Royal Variety Performance in December, Frank Skinner says he received an apologetic letter from the Countess of Wessex.
Sophie was scathing of radio host Frank’s and David Baddiel’s rendition of football song Three Lions at the Royal Albert Hall, but she has subsequently written to him to apologise.
The 58-year-old monarch appeared to take issue with the fact that he ‘argued back’ when she advised him, ‘Well, don’t give up your day job,’ according to the award-winning comedian.
The event, as Frank recounted over the weekend, occurred after the concert when Sophie and her husband Prince Edward greeted the Royal Variety performers.
Frank stated that he had been feeling ill but chose to go ahead with the performance despite the fact that it ‘hurted to sing’.
Offering Frank some feedback, she reportedly told him: ‘Well, don’t give up your day job,’ according to The Times.

Explaining his thought process, Frank shared: ‘I thought, “This is not how the royal walk thing works”. And we honestly said, “Pardon?”
‘It’s supposed to be just banal compliments. I said, “Was it that bad?” And she said “Well, you know, I could tell, you know, it’s not what you do”.’
He went on: ‘And I said, “Erm, well, normally we’re like comics”. She said “Yeah, but you’re on screen aren’t you, you’re not used to a live crowd”.
‘I said, “Well we’ve done a bit of live stuff you know, stand-up”. But she’s sticking with it and said “Yeah, but you haven’t done anywhere the size of this”.’

Frank went on: ‘I said, “Look, I did the Palladium last Sunday”.
‘She looked at me like, “You’re not supposed to be arguing, I don’t think you’re supposed to be arguing with me, you’re supposed to just nod”. It was like a really awkward thing.’
