After trying to impart his deep ideas about racism on stage, Matty Healy was clumsily cut off by his bandmates, saving him, perhaps, from himself.
The 1975 have been touring in support of their current album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, and they stopped in Leeds earlier this week.
So far, the tour has been fairly eventful, with Matty, 33, eliciting a wide range of reactions from the crowd, including swoons, cringes, and gags. He has been known to kiss admirers (though voluntarily), suck thumbs, have tattoos on his chest, and even consume ‘raw meat’ in front of his followers.
Matty seemed to want to get his thoughts out at the band’s most recent tour gig, but his comments against racism were met with a cool reception from neither fans nor bandmates.
In a video shared on TikTok, the Somebody Else hitmaker told the crowd: ‘I don’t think it’s a racist thing to say…,’ at which point the intro to their song, It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You), immediately began playing.
Matty was heard shouting: ‘Oh, for f**k sake,’ before dancing and starting to perform the track but clearly annoyed.
Fans are convinced he then mouthed angrily: ‘I was going to say something not racist.’
Referring to The 1975’s drummer, George Daniel, one fan joked under the post: ‘George said not today,’ while another added: ‘George needs the paychecks.’
Predicting Matty’s next statement, a fan laughed: ‘They knew it was gonna be outta pocket.’
One quipped: ‘George’s life flashed in front of his eyes as he ran to press the button to intro the song.’

‘The rest of them not trying to get cancelled,’ another joined in.
One praised: ‘This is the best PR move I’ve ever seen.’
When Taylor Swift made a surprise visit at a concert The 1975 were playing in London earlier this month, it felt like the tour had finally reached its zenith.
An unexpected effect of her presence was seen on Matty, who promised not to kiss anybody at the show out of respect for the pop diva.
‘I’m not kissing anybody in front of Taylor Swift, have some respect,’ he told the roaring crowd according to reports from concert-goers.
‘In front of the Queen – it’s not happening!’
Perhaps Taylor should attend every show…
