The BBC has announced that Ghosts will conclude with a fifth and final season.
The popular program, which debuted on the Line of Duty broadcaster in 2019, stars You actor Charlotte Ritchie and Taskmaster’s Kiell Smith-Bynoe.
The sitcom features Alison (Ritchie) and Mike (Smith-Bynoe), a young couple who suddenly acquire a grand rural house only to discover it is falling apart and overrun with ghosts.
In a statement published on the Ghosts team’s social media, it said: ‘After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace.
‘We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series and we can’t wait to share it with you all later this year.
‘We could never have imagined the reception the show has enjoyed, or the fun we have had making it, and we would like to thank our amazing cast and crew as well as everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support.’
The final season will follow Alison and Mike as they try to find a semi-harmonious routine with Button House’s ghoulish roommates while also working on a new money-making endeavour to finance the home’s never-ending repairs.
According to the synopsis: ‘Without the money to continue the extensive building work and the hotel still a distant dream, Alison and Mike decide to try to rent the place out for events.’
Ghosts was turned into a Red Nose Day skit in March, featuring none other than music legend Kylie Minogue, much to the joy of fans of the show and the I Should Be So Lucky vocalist.
The Spinning Around hitmaker paid a call to Button House for the Comic Relief special, while Alison and Mike were busy organising a music festival on the manor’s grounds.
Ghosts, like other British series such as The Office, was adapted for the American market in 2021.
The series, which stars Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar, was revived for a third season in January.
Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
