Catfish UK hosts Nella Rose and Oobah Butler stress that, despite the ‘outlandish’ stories, the reality programme is not manufactured.
The show is a spin-off of the hugely famous US version, which follows people who have never met their spouse in person to reveal phoney identities online.
A ‘catfish,’ for those who are unfamiliar with the term, is someone who steals someone else’s images, videos, or personal information to construct a bogus profile or website when creating their false identity.
Hosts Nev Shulman and Kamie Crawford have been fronting the series in the US for over a decade, but filmmaker Oobah and social media star Nella are now in charge in the UK.
Catfish had people perplexed with intriguing narratives ranging from one individual believing they were in a long-term romance with singer Katy Perry to another demanding vengeance on their victim.
The event has been plagued with’staged’ claims in recent years, but Nella and Oobah assured us that this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Addressing what fans can expect from the third installment, Nella, 25 told Metro.co.uk: ‘This season you can tell from the sheer emotion that this is legit.
‘Yeah some stories are outlandish, and it’s like “omg how could you not believe that,” but we need to understand that not everyone is switched on to technology, or tech-savvy, and some people are just hopeless romantics.’
Nella enthused: ‘Before Christ, people have been hopeless romantics, in the Bible there were hopeless romantics.
‘So it’s not something that is ever going to stop, and with the internet being so accessible, it’s two things that are going to come together. So catfish will always happen, unfortunately, and that’s why it’s important to get these stories out there… to remind people that this happens not only on dating apps, but on social media as well.’
This season will begin with a bang as the hilarious duo ventures into the strange lands of the Metaverse for the first time.
Consider ourselves curious!
Guest host and Geordie Shore star Nathan Henry will assist them in putting a stop to the catfishers, even investigating a scam involving his former castmate Jay Gardner.
The sleuths are then shown putting on VR headsets as their avatars visit the Metaverse, presumably to stop some catfishers.
Speaking about the upcoming series, Oobah said: ‘We’ve got one or two of the most intense catfishes we’ve ever had, like people have been doing this for over a decade.
We were both surprised by the technology, and we had this episode with the metaverse, which was new to both of us.
‘I had no idea people were dating in the metaverse!’
Catfish UK returns to MTV at 9pm on Wednesday January 11.
