Lorraine Kelly had a tense conversation with one of Happy Valley’s actors, Amit Shah, as the show’s last episode approaches.
The actor was on her programme on Friday when they started talking about the predicament the pharmacist he portrays had gotten himself in.
Faisal Bhatti, who was introduced in this series, had been selling narcotics to Joanna (Mollie Winnard) in exchange for sex.
Faisal felt he couldn’t face the danger of Joanna revealing what he’d been doing to Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire), so he bludgeoned her with a rolling pin and injected a deadly air bubble into her veins to kill her.
Lorraine stated Faisal was a ‘unlikely killer’ while discussing the stunning murder, although she wasn’t a fan of his family.
‘He is a handsome local pharmacist and is a regular guy who you would probably think would blend into the background and he feels a bit invisible in his own life, but he’s made some really bad decisions,’ Amit first said of his character.
‘Yes, he has committed murder and he has been selling drugs to people and shouldn’t have been and then he’s got in trouble with them all…he has made interesting choices, but I have to say though, his family are awful,’ Lorraine added.
After she said that, Amit looked quite confused, asking ‘really?’, before Lorraine again said: ‘Yes, they are.’
‘They’re lovely,’ he said quietly, before she reiterated her point.
‘The wife and daughter are awful. You can almost feel a wee bit of sympathy for him,’ she said.
Amit then responded: ‘Ok well I guess…no…it’s not justification for him to murder someone.’
Lorraine agreed with him, and the two moved on to discuss the series’ conclusion this weekend.
Amit described himself as ‘terrified’ when he first read the screenplay.
‘I didn’t want to do the [Yorkshire] accent. I was terrified of how complicated this character was and the size of the show and then my agent said to me, because I hadn’t seen any of the previous series, she said “go home and watch an episode”, and 12 hours later I’d binged one and two,’ he recalled.
After realising he was way in over his head, Amit said Faisal ‘didn’t belong in this world’.
‘He’s not a slick, drug-dealing kingpin,’ he explained.
‘He’s in this pressure cooker situation and is being threatened in all directions.’
With only one episode remaining, Amit held his cards close to his chest and avoided revealing any facts.
He said: ‘I respect you too much to ruin it for you and the audiences at home.’
Happy Valley concludes on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One. Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
