Rhys Connah of Happy Valley stated he had no clue how the programme would conclude and watched it for the first time with the rest of the country.
During his first ever TV interview on Monday, the actor, 16, who portrays Ryan in the BBC blockbuster hit drama, provided the inside scoop on the highly anticipated finale episode.
The series has been a part of the young actor’s life for longer than he imagined, as writer Sally Wainwright waited until he was mature enough to continue presenting her narrative.
He appeared in series one before filming was halted until he seemed old enough to play Ryan as a teenager for two more seasons until the programme, which also starred Sarah Lancashire and James Norton, came to an end.
In an interview with the Loose Women panel, Rhys discussed his time on the set and admitted he had no idea of the surprise conclusion that had a record-breaking number of people riveted to their couches.
‘When I initially got the screenplay, the very first draught of episode six, I read parts of it and got to the point with the car collision and everything, but towards the end it was all censored, blacked, redacted – everything,’ Rhys explained.

He continued: ‘So I spoke to James and Sarah and obviously I had an idea of what was going on, they sort of told us but I had no clue how it was going to play out on camera, the series of event, I just sort of knew what happened so I was able to watch it borderline for the first time last night.’

When asked what he thought of the finished film, the young actor said, ‘I really enjoyed it!’
Rhys explained further: ‘They went for more of an emotional side instead of a big fight scene.
‘A lot of people weren’t expecting it but I think it was the best choice made by Sally’.
The last episode of Happy Valley aired on BBC One on Sunday night to an astounding 7.5 million people, making it the most watched show of 2023.
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV
