The announcement of the Fawlty Towers revival surprised many people, including the lady who helped conceive it.
Last Thursday, John Cleese helped announce the return of the popular British sitcom, four decades after the final episode aired.
The Monty Python actor, 82, played Basil Fawlty in the show’s two seasons, which aired in 1975 and 1979.
Cleese is now working on new episodes with his comedic daughter Camilla, 39.
However, his ex-wife Connie Booth, 82, claims she was not informed about the project despite having contributed to the original.
Polly, Basil’s chambermaid, was also played by her in the series.
‘I’d rather have learned about the initiative from John than read about it in the newspaper,’ she remarked.
‘Because a previous American reboot of Fawlty Towers had failed a few years ago, I was astonished to hear that another was in the works.
‘I was even more astonished to learn that John intended to compose and play in it with his daughter Camilla,’ she told The Times.
While Booth was surprised to learn of the project, she wished her ex-husband and his daughter, whose mother is the actor’s second wife, Barbara Trentham, the best of success.
The return will show Basil grappling with the revelation that he had a daughter he had no idea existed, all while attempting to keep up with the current, ever-changing world.
Cleese stated last week that he is ‘enormously looking forward to developing it into a series.’
The series will be executive produced by actor Rob Reiner, his wife, actress Michele Reiner, director and producer Matthew George, and Derrick Rossi.
However, some viewers are divided about the return, with many afraid that it would not be as ‘funny’ as the original.
One stated it seemed like a horrible idea as the original was ‘pure perfection’.
Cleese and Booth married in 1968 and were married for ten years before divorcing.
Fawlty Towers is streaming on Prime Video.
