Kate Garraway was emotional on Good Morning Britain as she reflected on her documentary Caring For Derek, about her husband Derek Draper.
The star, 55, has been shortlisted for a National Television Award for the programme, which shows the reality of caring for her husband following his battle with Covid-19 and the long-term health issues it left him with.
Praising his co-star, Robert Rinder said on the show: ‘I’m so proud of you today, your amazing documentary Caring For Derek being shortlisted for a National TV Award, and your passion to use your platform for change, for authenticity, just makes me proud to know you.’
Welling up, Rob insisted: ‘I’m not gonna cry!’
Describing his words as ‘lovely’, Kate responded: ‘I’m gonna cry myself!’
Rob also described Kate as ‘sunshine in human form’ and said that she models ‘the possibility against the backdrop of darkness of being light in every sense.’
Derek – known to be Britain’s longest serving hospital in-patient after contracting the virus – has suffered long-lasting damage to major organs as a result of Covid-19.
At the time, Kate took time off from her hosting duties and stepped back from her Smooth FM radio show to continue her round-the-clock care for Derek, for whom she adapted their family home upon his return from hospital.
Kate said she does up to seven loads of washing each day at their London home, which the star also shares with two children Darcey, 16, and William, 13.
Her last documentary, Finding Derek, won an NTA in 2021 after It became ITV’s most watched factual programme in years fetching an average of 4.5million viewers.
Picking up the award, Kate said: ‘It was a hugely brave decision of ITV to commission, they didn’t know what they were making. [Director] Lucy arrived not knowing if she was seeing a family in grief or relief, in the end it ended up being something between the two.
‘Thank you so much for voting. I’m wondering if that was because our story is also your story.
‘We’ve all been touched by the pandemic, all the other docs that have been highlighted and nominated tonight they’ve also been affected by the pandemic.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
