Star Wars legend Mark Hamill has admitted he was surprised Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelensky even had to time to reach out to him during the Russian invasion during an appearance on Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.
Hamill, 71, has been named as the Ambassador for the Army of Drones, joining forces with Zelensky to combat the Russians.
The Luke Skywalker actor spoke to Kuenssberg on Sunday morning following the announcement and explained why he felt the ‘heroic’ leader appealed to him.
Hamill said it was easy to make the comparisons between the ongoing invasion and the Star Wars franchise.
Recalling their meeting, the actor said: ‘He did reference the movies and it’s not hard to understand why.
‘Star Wars was always a fairytale for children and fairytales are always morality tales of good versus evil where good is easily defined and evil is clearly defined,
‘It’s not hard to extrapolate an evil empire with Russia invading a sovereign nation so it’s not surprising.

‘That’s probably what appealed to him about me.’
Asked if Zelensky is a Star Wars fan, Hamill continued: ‘Apparently so – he was probably just a little boy when he movies came out. We didn’t dwell on it, obviously.
‘I was surprised he had the time in his schedule to even talk to me. We spoke for so long, I thought, “don’t you need to go back to work?”’

Welcoming Hamill’s involvement to fight Russia, on Thursday September 29, Zelensky announced on Instagram: ‘American actor who played Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, Mark Hamill became the ambassador of the United24 fundraising platform.
‘He is the first ambassador to help raise funds to support our defenders, the Drone Army.
‘This is a difficult yet very important mission. Mark, we are sure you will definitely handle it.
‘Thank you for supporting the Ukrainian people in our struggle for freedom.’
Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg airs Sundays on BBC One.
