As she prepares to reprise her role as Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Michelle Pfeiffer remarked that she had “no idea” what she’s doing when it comes to appearing in a Marvel film.
The newest Marvel film sees hero Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), in the Quantum Realm with his family, including daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), lover Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and her parents, Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet.
Given that Janet was rescued after being confined there for 30 years in the last film, her reappearance is a bit of a surprise.
However, the teasers for the film have so far promised plenty of action for the 64-year-old Hollywood actress, best known for performances in films such as What Lies Beneath, Scarface, and Dangerous Liaisons.
At the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania news conference, the actress was quick to quip that she felt out of her depth when questioned about her approach to her part in the MCU, which she joined in 2018, and how it contrasted to prior ones.
‘I have no idea what I’m doing, I’m just going to say,’ she explained.
‘I just marvel at these guys [Paul Rudd and co], because they just get it – and I just copy what they do!’
However, the three-time Oscar nominee does have some comic book movie experience, having played Catwoman in 1992’s Batman Returns alongside Michael Keaton.
‘After finally being rescued from the Quantum Realm after 30 years and reunited with her loving husband Hank and daughter Hope, she is just savouring their time together and fairly – emphatically so – discreet about her time down there,’ she continued.
‘She’s not really wanting to get into that until we all, of course, find ourselves down in a that parallel universe and a parallel world.’
‘She is forced to confront the reality and in a place she believed she would never see again,’ the actress teased, referring to Janet’s three decades locked in the Quantum Realm. And 30 years is a long period, people have needs – and let’s not be judgmental – and I believe the family will be surprised.
‘Maybe some choices were questionable, but they’re a very forgiving family. Her story is very much a part of the whole ‘family secrets’ theme that runs through the film.’
Intriguing!
Ant-Man And the Wasp: Quantumania is set for release on February 17, 2023.
