Claire Richards of Steps is Stomping out on her own after admitting the pop legends are taking a break – and she’s also revealed how she remained cool when dressed as Knitting on The Masked Singer.
The What The Future Holds singer revealed her solo aspirations in an interview with Guilty Pleasures.
Steps have reassembled three times since their first breakup in the early 2000s, most recently in 2017, and their Platinum Collection album topped the UK album charts last September.
‘I’m working on an album, so hopefully that’ll be out at some point this year,’ said Claire, 45, who was unveiled as Knitting on The Masked Singer at the weekend.
‘I’m doing gigs on my own all summer. Steps are having a break at the moment. This year’s definitely a year for us all to be doing stuff.
‘We released four albums in five years, and with Covid and the tour and everything, I think we all needed a break, a bit of time to gather ourselves again.
‘Then, when we come back together, it makes it exciting.
‘It can get old very quickly when there’s too much of it. We worked really hard in the last five years or so. It’s open-ended, but I have no doubt that we will be back at some point.’
After pulling the wool over our eyes as Knitting, the mother-of-two revealed that the outfit she donned on ITV’s mystery celebrity singing competition was a complete knit-mare.
‘It was quite heavy, and it was so hot… I had ice packs tucked in my bra,’ she laughed, adding she came close to fainting at one stage.
‘We’d done a group number, and they said, “Right, we’re gonna go straight again”.
‘I was like, “There’s no way, I’m going to pass out!” I had to waddle off the stage and have a head break!’
