Brittany Murphy documentary trailer explores her mysterious death as husband Simon Monjack labeled ‘disturbed individual’

The first trailer for HBO Max’s Brittany Murphy trailer reveals what those closest to the star believed happened before her shock death in 2009.

The two-part special, What Happened, Brittany Murphy?, attempts to answer questions about the life of the beloved actress who died at the age of 32.

Though her death was ruled an accident and determined to be the result of a combination of pneumonia and the effects of several over-the-counter drugs she had taken, the death of her husband, Simon Monjack, months later instantly fueled speculation about her passing.

Family members and friends of the actress appear in the trailer as Murphy’s King of the Hill co-star Kathy Najimy stated: ‘During a little dip she had, that’s when he [Simon] came. I think that’s where her judgment was muddled and she became prey…

‘We all were scared and freaked out like “who was this guy?”‘.

Another interview subject stated ‘every single word [from Monjack] was a lie,’ including claims he was dying from terminal cancer, had dated Elle Macpherson and Madonna, and that he had the world’s largest Vermeer collection.

‘Simon took her away, he made sure no-one could get to her,’ one person claimed, while another added: ‘Simon had all these secrets. He actually said people in the government were watching them’.

Speaking to People about Monjack, documentary director Cynthia Hill stated: ‘He was a disturbed individual who was used to conning people and Brittany was one of his last victims.

‘There was a pattern of behavior that became very obvious the more research that we did.’

The project features an interview with Monjack’s former fiancée Elizabeth Ragsdale who alleges he lied to her about his identity.

She claims he got her pregnant before leaving her stranded in New York after requesting she fly there so they could start their family together.

The documentary also follows Murphy’s struggles in the film industry, where she drastically changed her appearance and updated her wardrobe to fit the image she was pressured into.

A synopsis for the documentary reads: ‘A beloved Hollywood starlet known for a number of iconic roles – gone at 32 years old.

‘Unanswered questions, controversial figures, and surrounded by speculation: what really happened to Brittany Murphy? This two-part documentary explores her life beyond headlines, celebrating her legacy and investigating her tragic and untimely death.’
