Much-loved Gogglebox cast member Mary Cook’s funeral has taken place in Bristol, with family members reflecting on the day.
Fans of the Channel 4 show were left devastated to hear of Mary’s death earlier this summer at the age of 92.
She had featured on Gogglebox alongside friend Marina Wingrove since 2016 and become a staple of the programme.
On Friday October 1, her funeral took place at Bristol Crematorium, with her family delivering some heartfelt words about their late relative.
Her granddaughter Nikki also explained to OK! that Mary could be heard singing at her own funeral as a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon played as her coffin arrived at the cemetery.
Mary had also previously recorded versions of My Way and Audrey Hepburn’s Moon River, which featured later on in the service.
Her relative later said in a statement: ‘My nan loved life and certainly wasn’t ready to leave. This radiated from her.’
She also paid tribute to the show during her words about her grandmother, stating how much she had loved appearing on the programme in recent years.
Nikki continued: ‘She was a great singer, a great actress and as viewers saw she definitely enjoyed entertaining the nation over the last five years of fame that she had on Gogglebox.
‘It was a very beautiful service with so many friends and family, nan would have enjoyed every minute of it.
‘It was really special to hear nan’s songs throughout the service, especially her singing My Way, which was my mum and aunt’s favourite song of nan’s.
‘My nan was… is… an amazing and inspiring woman who wanted to live forever and she will, of course, as she will live on through us and in our hearts.
She concluded her statement by saying: ‘We should all be more like her, full of life, full of fun and full of love.’
Viewers of the long-running Friday night programme had grown to love the fun of Mary and Marina’s friendship in the five years they were on the show and a picture of the pair was present in the order of service at the funeral.
It’s reported they were initially approached to take part in the show during a trip to Asda when they were discovered by a researcher.
The pair had been firm friends for over a decade after moving into the same retirement complex, St Monica’s Trust.
Last year, they had not featured so much on the programme due to the pandemic resulting in their absence but joined together earlier this year for the previous series finale after shielding.
Channel 4 confirmed Mary had died back in August, telling fans: ‘We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
‘She will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.’
