Warning: spoilers ahead for the season two finale of His Dark Materials.
His Dark Materials fans have expressed their devastation over the death of a beloved character, with one person saying the scene was ‘worse than they imagined it would be’ after reading the books.
In the season two finale, aeronaut Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and John Parry (Andrew Scott) face an attack from Magisterium troops, with Lee being hit in the foot as they try to get away.
Lee tells John to carry on without him to search for the bearer of the Subtle Knife, while he and his hare daemon Hester do their best to hold off the soldiers.
After John leaves them, Lee is tragically hit by a couple more bullets, resulting in him and Hester sadly dying after sharing an emotional moment together.
While those who have read the book will have been aware that this distressing scene was coming, watching it on screen left many fans ‘crying’ with sadness.
‘This is even more heartbreaking than the books,’ one person said.
‘Nope I am not ok. I knew I wouldn’t be,’ another admitted.
Someone else said that they ‘didn’t sign up for this kind of heartbreak’ when watching Lee’s death in the episode.
‘Even though I’ve read the books countless times, I still hoped for a different outcome to THAT scene,’ another stated.
Several viewers also expressed their admiration for Lee’s loyal daemon Hester, who disappeared into dust when Lee died in the episode.
‘Oh, Hester, the best little hare,’ one fan commented.
As the finale of series two, the episode was bound to be a tear-jerker!
