BBC Radio 1 presenter Jordan North has revealed the extreme lengths he went to in preparation for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, undergoing a back and chest wax before entering Gwrych Castle in Wales.
When celebrities agree to take part in I’m A Celeb, they do so fully aware that they’ll likely have to face difficult, terrifying challenges in front of a television audience of millions.
At the beginning of the series, Jordan, 30, appeared to be one of the most fearful members of the cast, throwing up on the side of the cliff before doing an abseil and screaming about his ‘happy place’ while locked up underground with 30 snakes for company.
But before the series had even started, Jordan had to psyche himself up for a scary task – having a painful body wax.
During Saturday night’s episode of the ITV show, the radio DJ explained the intense pain of having his back and chest waxed, a cosmetic procedure he’d never had done before.
‘Before I came in here, for the first time I got a wax. I’ve never felt pain like it. I got my chest and my back done,’ he said.
‘She’s doing my chest and I’m screaming and she’s going, ‘Ssshhhh I have clients downstairs.’’
Jordan recalled that the pain got so ‘bad’ that the beauty technician placed the stick typically used to spread the wax in his mouth to stifle his screams.
‘It got that bad, I was screaming that much you know that pasting sticks that they use to put it on, she put it in my mouth and went, ‘Here, bite this.’’
Commenting on Jordan’s anecdote, television presenter Vernon Kay speculated that ‘no one told him what it would involve’ to have a wax, as otherwise he wouldn’t have had it done.
‘Now you know what Jordan’s like. He doesn’t like anything. He’s scared of anything and everything and for him to personally volunteer to go and get a waxing.
‘Obviously, no one told him what it would involve because knowing Jordan he wouldn’t have done it. You can just imagine Jordan lay on the table.’
Jordan added that he knew it was time to move out of his family home when his mother helped to ‘veet his back’ one day.
‘I knew I needed to leave home when my mum was veeting my back and we couldn’t find the scraper so she rang my dad at work and she just used an old Blockbuster card and I knew there and then I need to move out,’ he said.
‘I had to buy aloe vera cream and everything. Never again will I have a wax.’
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues on Sunday evening at 9pm on ITV.
