It’s time to play the music… The Muppet Show is coming to Disney Plus

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights… it’s time to watch The Muppet Show on Disney Plus.

It has been announced that all five seasons of The Muppet Show will stream on Disney Plus from next month – marking the first time the final two seasons have ever been released on home entertainment.

The news had been teased over the weekend on The Muppets’ Twitter account, with a post reading: ‘Calling all Muppet fans! Get ready for a major and important Muppet announcement coming soon. What is it? We have no idea.’

However, it was confirmed today, with a tweet reading: ‘Play the music! Light the lights! ALL FIVE SEASONS of The Muppet Show are coming exclusively to @disneyplus! Why don’t we get things started on February 19?’

Kermit the Frog – yes, actual Kermit the Frog – said: ‘It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more.

‘Today, I’m proud to say: “It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!” And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony,  I can only add: “Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.”’

The iconic sketch comedy show was filmed in Elstree Studios – the home of Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother – and originally ran from 1976 to 1981.

The show made stars out of Jim Henson’s legendary characters including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the Swedish Chef, who gained such recognition from the show that genuine A-listers clamoured to appear alongside them.

Celebrity guests across the five seasons include Steve Martin, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Alice Cooper, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Gene Kelly and Mark Hamill, with no celeb appearing on the show twice.

While the first three seasons have been released on VHS and DVD, the last two have never been commercially released.

Disney Plus is already home to The Muppets films including 2011’s The Muppets starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, Muppet Treasure Island and The Muppet Christmas Carol, as well as the 2015 Muppets documentary-style series and Muppets Babies.

The Muppets Show is available to stream on Disney Plus from February 19.
