Janet Street-Porter calls supporters defending Boris Johnson staying as Prime Minister because of ‘issues’ like Ukraine ‘frankly grotesque’

Janet Street-Porter didn’t hold back from slamming people citing that Boris Johnson should remain as Prime Minister for ‘issues like Ukraine’.

The Loose Women panellists had been discussing Johnson’s ‘victory, of sorts,’ after the results of the confidence vote were announced in Parliament, with the PM surviving the ballot by 211-148.

Despite only winning by 63 votes, the Tory leader claimed his victory was earned with a ‘convincing and decisive’ majority, saying: ‘I think this is a very good result for politics and for the country.’

He added: ‘What it means that as a government we can move on and focus on the stuff that really matters,’ and elsewhere shared plans to ‘bash on’.

Focusing on his use of the words ‘bash on’, Janet commented: ‘It’s an expression that has enraged me.’

She said: ‘That just shows you that no matter how serious the situation is, Boris will always choose the handy catch-phrase, the headline-grabbing couple of words, over understanding the crisis that we are in, and how it affects ordinary people.

‘You can’t just bash on and solve the problem,’ she continued, highlighting problems like increasing food and fuel bills and NHS waiting lists, before adding: ‘Bashing isn’t the correct word, bashing something you do in a car wrecker’s yard, and honestly the Tory party at the moment does seem like something you find in a wrecker’s yard, full of knackered cars.’

She continued: ‘When you’ve got 148 people in your party who voted against you and want you out, you’re in a tricky situation.’

When fellow panellist Ruth Langsford asked whether now was the right time to hold the vote, ‘when all this was going on’, Janet was quick to slam those who defend Johnson remaining as PM for issues like the ongoing war in Ukraine.

‘To keep citing the war in Ukraine as a reason why we need him in power is frankly grotesque. That war is going to continue for some time, there are plenty of people in ministerial positions who are just as adept as Boris as sorting out the correct strategy for Ukraine.

‘So I don’t think that issues like Ukraine are a reason to keep him in power,’ she added.

‘Our Queen has spoken,’ Ruth joked, while Coleen Nolan mouthed ‘Help’ to the camera as Janet continued commenting on how the public have ‘turned-off’ from all politicians.

‘We are in a democracy and I do want people to vote and I do want people to care about their political views,’ Janet concluded.

‘I’m voting on Love Island,’ Coleen quipped.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
