Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar says ‘there is a clue out there’ about what happens after Kate Fleming and Ryan Pilkington showdown

Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar has hinted that a clue is ‘out there’ about what happens next after the tense stand off between Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and corrupt copper Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) in Sunday night’s episode.

Kate had been lured to a dark, secluded location by AC-12 target DCI Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) who was revealed to be related to a familiar face from the past – Tommy Hunter, leader of the organised crime group (OCG) until his death in series two.

Ryan then ambushed Kate, pointing a gun at her and threatening to shoot. Kate aimed her gun and warned him to back off, and as things escalated two gunshots rang out just as the episode ended, leaving what came next a total mystery until Sunday.

Actor Adrian, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings on Jed Mercurio’s crime drama, told Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray that the ‘hardcore’ fans have already spotted what follows.

He said on Monday’s episode: ‘Jed loves his cliffhangers, it was a really good one this time.’

Asked what will become of Kate, he said: ‘A lot of Line of Duty fans know, Line of Duty fans know what’s going on. All will be revealed in time.

re and we’ve got core.’

Susanna confessed she was struggling to connect the dots to this mystery clue, with the actor saying she wasn’t ‘hardcore enough’ but was getting there.

‘We’re kind of looking forward to how that plays out over the next few days,’ he added.

Fans suspect that a scene in the teaser trailer for series six that was released in March, showing Kate and Jo facing off against AC-12, holds a clue as to who might come out of the stand off unscathed.

The actor revealed that he usually gets ‘notes’ from the BBC on what he can and can’t say about the show when he does interviews.

‘Now and again leaks do happen and it’s a show that depends on collusion of the public with the show,’ he said.

He explained that the cast – and sometimes boss Jed too – often don’t know how a series is going to end until the 99th hour. The only giveaway would be whether they’re asked to film a mystery scene to be added in later.

‘Regarding the ending, Jed always gives himself a bit of leeway and we don’t get last episode until late in the day,’ Adrian said.

‘We don’t know for the first three episodes, sometimes Jed doesn’t know. He might just say to one of us, “do a look over here a look over there”.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
