Adele has opened up about how she told her son that she was divorcing her husband Simon Konecki, saying that she feared he would ‘hate her forever’.
The singer’s new critically-acclaimed album, titled 30, delves deeply into her separation from Konecki, to whom she was married from 2018 to 2021.
The pair began dating in 2011, before welcoming their son, Angelo, a year later.
While chatting to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Adele spoke candidly about writing the song My Little Love from the album about her son, explaining that he noticed that she wasn’t being ‘present’ at the time of her separation from his father.
The Grammy Award winner acknowledged that while she was ‘present in life’, she ‘wasn’t really there’.
‘I was just so consumed… by so many things, to be honest with you, so many different feelings,’ she said.
‘And [Angelo] plucked up the courage to very articulately say to me, “You’re basically a ghost. You might as well not be here.” When he said, “I can’t see you.” And I’m like, what kind of poet is that? For him to be little and say, “I can’t see you,” to my face broke my heart.’
Adele added that when she made the decision to leave the ‘structure’ of her marriage, she wondered: ‘What if he hates me forever?’
However, she feels that her son has ‘some empathy’ for her, as he makes an effort to ask to spend time with her when he’s with her dad.
Before Adele split up from Konecki, she recalled being taken aback by men in LA ‘trying to chirpse me at the bar’ while she was married.
‘And I’ll be like, “Are you flirting with me? Don’t you…”. I’d be like, “I’m married.” I’d be like, “No, I don’t want to f**king go out with you, I’m married.” And I wasn’t anymore. It was very, very strange,’ she said.
The singer added that she was ‘grateful’ that she didn’t date for ‘most of 25’, as it meant that no one came out of the woodwork telling stories about her dating life.
