Chris Evans has told us all to ‘get excited’, as he’s promising big things when it comes to his new Buzz Lightyear movie from Pixar.
The Avengers star has big shoes to fill as he’s taking on the iconic Disney character – made famous by Tim Allen from classic movie Toy Story – for a new film.
Shedding some light on the upcoming release, Chris revealed that he had reservations on joining forces with Pixar to play Buzz – especially as he believes ‘no one can touch’ Allen’s original performance of the space ranger.
However, after hearing Pixar’s pitch, Chris teased that he was smiling from ‘ear to ear’ and assured that anyone with reservations, like he initially had, can ‘rest easy’.
The actor, 39, posted a first look image of his Buzz character to Instagram and revealed it is a ‘dream come true’ to be working on the animation.
He said: ‘Working with Pixar is a dream come true. I’ve been a massive fan of their films since the very beginning.
‘My team could barely contain their excitement when they told me that Pixar had a pitch for me. All they said was “Buzz Lightyear”. I didn’t know what that meant, since Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear, and no one could ever touch his performance.’
Chris continued: ‘I needed to know how this character was different and why this story was worth telling. I can say 2 things with absolute confidence: 1. I didn’t stop smiling through the ENTIRE pitch. Ear to ear.
‘2. Everyone can rest easy. And get very excited. Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they’re doing over there.’
He insisted: ‘This one is gonna [be] special, and it doesn’t step on a single thing. I can’t even put my excitement into words. I smile every time I think about it.
Ok, so now we’re officially intrigued.
Chris is set to voice Buzz in a new origin story, titled Lightyear, put together by Pixar and set to hit screens in 2022.
He clarified that his character will be the real-life version of Buzz, compared to Allen’s portrayal of the character as a toy.
After Pixar dropped a teaser on Twitter, Chris posted: ‘And just to be clear, this isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on.’
Pixar tweeted: ‘Blasting into theaters June 17, 2022, Lightyear is the definitive story of the original Buzz Lightyear. Voiced by @ChrisEvans, get ready to go to “infinity and beyond” with Lightyear.’
Chris is best known for playing Marvel superhero Captain America, with the Avenger handing over his shield in the final Avengers instalment Endgame, released in 2019.
Since then, Chris has appeared in Apple TV+ mini=series Defending Jacob as Andy Barber.
He’s also set to star in new Netflix movie Don’t Look Up alongside a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Leonardo Di Caprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill and Ariana Grande.
