Dwayne Wade was blown away by Mike Tyson defending his daughter Zaya after she was subjected to transphobic comments.

Zaya, formerly known as Zion, came out as transgender earlier this year and confirmed she would be using female pronouns.

However rapper Boosie Badazz publicly criticised the youngster and intentionally misgendered her.

Boxing champ Mike challenged Boosie on his remarks during a podcast interview this summer and it didn’t go unnoticed by Dwyane, who hailed his support a game-changing moment for his family.

Speaking to Central Ave, Dwyane revealed: ‘I actually talked to Mike about that early in the pandemic.

‘We had a conversation. I appreciated from a standpoint of, you know, Mike is someone who has never tried to be perfect. He is someone who has learned from this journey of life.

‘He’s so smart. He is so educated and knowledgeable about life. For him to be able to drop that nugget on the world, to me, it was great to hear him say that.’

Dwyane, who shared Zaya’s trans story on the Ellen Show in February, went on to explain how he has never hit back at critics or trolls taking aim at his daughter.

‘They don’t know us,’ he stated, adding: ‘They don’t know our heart. They definitely don’t know Zaya. So, all I do is what my mama say, “Just pray for them”.’

During his appearance on Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson, Boosie addressed his controversial comments about Zaya and said: ‘I really commented on the Dwyane Wade situation because I got offended because it’s a child. That’s really why I got offended.’

Mike hit back: ‘What happened to you that you think that you’re somebody that can comment on somebody’s life?’

Dwyane and his wife Gabrielle Union have been supportive of Zaya’s journey as a young transgender person, including attending Pride with her last year.

Speaking about Zaya’s transition, Dwyane told Ellen: ‘First of all, me and my wife Gabrielle, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud allies as well.

‘Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home… first, Zion. I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion. Zion, born as a boy, came home and said, “Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I’m ready to live my truth. And I want to be referenced as she and her. I’d love for you guys to call me Zaya”.’

He added: ‘Once Zion came home and said “call me Zaya” and was ready to take on this, I looked at her and said, “You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice”. Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually it will be through her.’
