Hugh Grant has shared the love for his former Bridget Jones co-star Renee Zellweger, claiming she’s ‘one of the few actresses’ he hasn’t fallen out with.
Consider us intrigued.
The first instalment, which starred Renee as clumsy journalist Bridget, and Hugh as her former boss and all-round slimeball Daniel Cleaver, was released almost 20 years ago, but they’ve stayed in touch to this day.
‘I love Renee. She’s one of the few actresses I haven’t fallen out with,’ he said.
‘And we got on very well together and, we still exchange long emails. Hers, in particular, are at least 70 pages each. Interesting stuff, but quite hard to decipher.’
The 60-year-old added to SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show: ‘She’s a properly good egg and a genius. Did you see her Judy Garland? About as good as acting gets.’
Hugh starred opposite Renee, 51, and Colin Firth, 60, who played Mark Darcy, in the original Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001, and then in the sequel, The Edge of Reason, in 2004.
Renee and Colin reprised their roles in 2013 for Bridget Jones’s Baby, although Hugh pulled out after deciding he ‘couldn’t make the character work in the story.’
Earlier this year, Renee and Hugh also gave us the Bridget Jones reunion we all deserved when they ran into each other at the Baftas.
As host Graham Norton prepared to welcome Hugh on stage to announce the best film winner, cameras caught the Paddington 2 actor hugging his former co-star who had just won best actress for her role in Judy.
Hugh arrived on stage and clearly couldn’t resist a reference to the movie, saying: ‘Well first of all, well done Jones.’
As the crowd laughed and applauded, he added: ‘That was a very, very, silly little dress I thought.’
The pair have both been smashing it in their recent roles, with Hugh applauded for his performance in HBO’s The Undoing, opposite Nicole Kidman.
Meanwhile, Renee landed an Oscar win for her performance in Judy, scooping up the best actress award.
