Jamelia admits she was ‘hiding’ behind her hair before cutting it all off to reveal stunning cropped look

Jamelia has opened up about the significant meaning behind her decision to cut all her hair off, explaining that she was ‘hiding behind’ her Afro.

The former Loose Women presenter unveiled her drastic makeover last week after going for ‘the big chop’ to reveal a stunning new cropped look.

It’s left her feeling refreshed and, for want of a less cliched term, like a brand new woman.

Sharing an update on her new look, Jamelia posted a photo of her crop and wrote in the caption: ‘These compliments really have gone to my head 🤣 but cutting my hair is about so much more than that for me… for the last 6 years, along with my hair, I have grown, evolved and improved.

‘Sometimes we hold on to parts of our identity for so long they become masks we hide behind.

‘I think my hair became that for me, and I began to ask myself questions like who am I without all this hair? And where will my confidence live without it? Well, this is me finding out 😬.’

She added: ‘Thank you all for the big ups (and Birthday wishes🥳, I had the most amazing day), I can’t lie I feel brand new, and I’m so ready to receive all of the blessings 2022 has to offer!

‘#Chapter41 #NewBeginnings #BigChop.’

Jamelia was spurred on to change her look to mark her 41st birthday on January 11.

The Superstar singer shared an Instagram video of the moment she went for the big chop, cutting her long and thick Afro herself.

Soundtracked to India Arie’s empowering anthem I Am Not My Hair, the video sees Jamelia unwrap her headscarf to reveal her full Afro hair.

After combing out each twist, Jamelia then sections off her hair before taking the scissors to it without hesitation. However, at one point she stops and mouths while holding the scissors to one piece of her tresses: ‘I’m not gon’ do it girl…,’ before snipping away and adding: ‘I did it.’

The TV star explained in the caption: ‘I did something very special in time for my upcoming birthday…I chose to Trust In The Magic of New Beginnings 😊✨💖.’

Loose Women presenter Charlene White applauded the makeover and commented: ‘Wow!!!! I love it you gorgeous woman ❤️❤️❤️.’

Jamelia has previously spoken about the lack of care for Black hair within the entertainment industry and her choice to wear her own natural. Last year, she claimed that she was told to straighten it while appearing on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.
