James Blunt has opened up on a ‘scary’ ordeal he once had with a stalker, who claimed to be the girl that inspired his hit You’re Beautiful and demanded royalties from the star.
The singer, 46, is famed for the number one hit that tells the story of a guy seeing his ex on the tube with someone else. It was the second single he released at the start of his career in 2004 and is James’ biggest single in the US to date.
Although, it sounds like the track is also to blame for stirring up trouble too, as James revealed one woman claimed that she was the girl the song had been written about and accused him of stalking her.
She hit James with a 50-page document to back up her claim and demanded royalties from him.
‘It was quite scary, she’s pretty fervent that she’s the woman for me from the subway. She sent me a detailed 50-page document about how I’ve been stalking her and that’s a little frightening,’ he told The Sun.
It was made all that more scary, as James revealed the woman in question was a fan of his and they had previously met at different gigs of his.
The woman’s case came with flaws, though, as she claimed James had been following her on the subway in 1984 – if that were the case, he would have been just 10 years old.
‘I had to point out that I wasn’t on the subway in 1984 which is when she claimed she saw me,’ James explained. ‘And the reason I could prove she wasn’t the woman in the song was that in 1984, I would have been 10 years old.’
‘The first time I visited the States was in 2002,’ he added. ‘So, that was all a bit strange.’
As James had debunked her claims, the woman was no longer able to pursue legal action, and, to this day, James has never revealed the real identity of the girl he had penned the hit about.
The musician has been forced to take a break from music due to the coronavirus pandemic, as lockdown has delayed his tour that had kicked off earlier this year.
After a month on the road, James had to push back the rest of his tour dates until next year, so he’s instead passed the time by putting together a book centred around his Twitter success.
He’s become known on the social media platform for his hilarious comebacks and sarcastic tweets, so now James has created a diary, a retrospective of his time online, in a new book titled How To Be A Complete and Utter Blunt: Diary of a Reluctant Social Media Sensation.
Despite his penchant for poking fun at himself online, James admits he doesn’t actually like social media because it ‘brings out the worst in humans’.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, James told us: ‘It’s incredible the vitriol you get online, people are just horrid to each other.’
‘I think it’s really nasty and that it brings out the worst in people. I think we should probably quit, but buy my book first,’ he joked. ‘It really does bring out the worst in humans, but again, once you know that, you can laugh at it.’
James said: ‘I think it must be tougher for people who are younger and don’t have the life experience to not take it too seriously or the support around them.’
‘I was older when I got into the music business because I was in the army. In the army, we get through our day by taking the p*ss out of each other, so we have thicker skins, generally.
‘I can put things into perspective, I can call my cousin in Iraq or my uncle in Afghanistan and if I say someone’s been nasty to me online, they can talk about their experiences that day and it pales my experience in comparison.’
