Paul Rudd may have been surprised at being chosen as People’s Sexiest Man Alive, but there’s one friend who knew it all along.
Jennifer Aniston has congratulated the actor on his new title, saying ‘we’ve always known this’.
The actress shared Paul’s video for the magazine announcing the news on her Instagram stories and wrote: ‘This makes me so happy. We’ve ALWAYS known this, but Paul Rudd is officially @people’s Sexiest Man Alive!’
Jennifer, 52, added: ‘You don’t age, which is weird. But we still love you.’
Paul, also 52, first starred alongside Jennifer in the 1998 film The Object of My Affection, in which he starred as a gay man who Jennifer’s character falls for.
They went on to play husband and wife in the 2012 comedy Wanderlust, with Jennifer’s future husband Justin Theroux playing the man that pushes a wedge between them.
And, of course, the pair acted alongside each other in the sitcom Friends, with Jennifer playing Rachel Green and Paul playing Phoebe Buffay’s eventual husband Mike Hannigan.
Ant-Man star Paul beat out other stars like Oscar Isaac, Harry Styles and Chris Evans to be chosen as People’s 2021 pick for Sexiest Man Alive, and seemed rather stunned that he was picked.
He said: ‘I do have an awareness, enough to know that when people hear that I’d be picked for this, they would say, “What?”This is not false humility. There are so many people that should get this before me.’
The Clueless star admitted that his wife of 18 years Julie was ‘stupefied’ by the announcement, saying: ‘After some giggling and shock, she said “Oh, they got it right.” And that was very sweet. She was probably not telling the truth, but what’s she going to say?’
While Jennifer and Julie thought it was the right choice, Paul suggested that he would be getting ‘so much grief’ off his mates over the title.
He said: ‘I mean, I’m going to lean into it hard. I’m going to own this. I’m not going to try to be like “Oh, I’m so modest.” I’m getting business cards made. But all of my friends will destroy me and I expect them to. And that’s why they’re my friends.’
Father-of-two Paul is the third oldest man to be crowned, following Sean Connery, who was 59 when he was crowned in 1989, and Harrison Ford, who was 56 when he won in 1998.
He takes over from 2020 Sexiest Man Alive Michael B Jordan.
Previous winners of the title include Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Pierce Brosnan and Patrick Swayze, with Richard Gere, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp all being named Sexiest Man Alive twice.
