Jo Whiley reveals ‘worst week of her life’ as sister battles Covid in hospital after waiting for jab

Jo Whiley has endured the ‘worst week’ of her life as her sister Frances battles Covid-19 in hospital.

The 55-year-old Radio 2 DJ revealed her younger sister – whose has a learning disability and diabetes – was offered the vaccine over the weekend but it came ‘too late’ as she’s now ‘fighting for her life’ after testing positive following an outbreak at her care home in Northamptonshire.

She said: ‘It has been the worst week of our lives without a shadow of a doubt. 24 hours ago we were talking palliative care… we are seeing her oxygen levels rise so at the moment, we’ve got hope.

‘When she was at the hospital, she was so terrified that she actually rampaged through the hospital and people couldn’t contain her. Security guards had to be involved, they had to restrain her.’

Jo has also recently questioned why she was offered the Covid jab before Frances, 53, despite her suffering with the rare genetic syndrome Cri du Chat.

Those with diabetes and people with a ‘severe of profound’ learning disability are in the priority group six, as well as unpaid carers for people with disabilities and the elderly.

Jo revealed she’s been trying for a long time to secure her sibling a vaccine, but now an offer has come ‘too late’.

Speaking to Andrew Marr over the weekend, she added: ‘I have no idea why I was offered the vaccine and my sister wasn’t.

‘It felt like the cruellest twist in the world, because I’ve been asking, wanting for her to have the vaccine for a year… to be protected.

‘She actually was called in for her vaccine Saturday night… but it’s too late, she’s fighting for her life in hospital… It just couldn’t be crueller.’

Fortunately, the family have seen a glimmer of ‘hope’ as Frances’ oxygen levels rose yesterday.

‘Twenty-four hours ago we didn’t have any hope at all, so she is an amazing fighter, she always has been a great fighter and I’m just hoping that her spirit gets her through,’ Jo said.
