Lord Alan Sugar says concerns about fuel shortages ‘just tip of the iceberg’ after Brexit

Lord Alan Sugar has weighed in on the recent fears about fuel shortages, claiming it’s just the start of problems for businesses after Brexit.

The Apprentice star claimed the shortage of HGV drivers and reports of long queues at the pumps in some parts of the country were the result of leaving the European Union.

He told the PA news agency: ‘It goes back to Brexit. It goes back to the lies that we were told by [Michael] Gove and [Boris] Johnson to convince the British to vote for Brexit.

‘It has been camouflaged a bit with Covid and now it is hitting home. It is as simple as that. It is hitting home.’

Transport secretary Grant Shapps recently spoke out on the driver shortage and said that Brexit is a ‘factor’.

He still insisted the ‘primary cause ‘of the shortages had been the cancellation of HGV driving tests last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But he admitted: ‘Brexit I hear mentioned a lot and it no doubt will have been a factor.

‘On the other hand, it has actually helped us to change rules to be able to test more drivers more quickly.

‘So, it has actually worked in both ways.’

Lord Sugar is best known for his role on The Apprentice, but the series has been absent from screens this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, we could be getting two more series soon.

A TV source told The Sun: ‘BBC bosses like what they’ve seen on the upcoming series and want two more.

‘The Apprentice was a big miss in the schedules last year, which they think will be reflected in the ratings.

‘So they want to strike while the iron’s hot and tie Lord Sugar down for two more series in quick succession, which they hope will have more of an international feel now lockdown restrictions are gradually lifting.’

It comes after Lord Sugar previously stated he wanted to make it to 20 years of the show before hanging up his boardroom boots.
