Shaughna Phillips’ mother had to follow her around with a mop after her wounds ‘leaked’ following liposuction.
We probably should have warned you not to read this while eating, eh?
The Love Island star underwent liposuction on her legs last year to treat lipoedema – increased enlargement of both legs due to deposits of fat beneath the skin.
The condition cannot be treated with diet or exercise, and the procedure has vastly increased Shaughna’s confidence, but she admits it’s not for the faint of heart.
The 27-year-old told the MailOnline: ‘The recovery is long winded. You don’t walk out a supermodel.
‘It’s messy and it’s long. Your wounds are left open to leak. My mum was following me around with a mop. She was changing my dressing.’
Shaughna had two litres of fat drained from her legs after suffering from inflammation, tender and swollen legs and bruising.
She is delighted with the results, and would have had the procedure done before Love Island had she had the money.
The reality star said: ‘I do feel more confident now, but when I go out I do worry that people are thinking “ohh her legs don’t look that different”. To me, they look completely different.
‘When I look at old clips, the difference is amazing.’
Shaughna, a fan favourite from 2020’s winter series of Love Island, told fans last September that she had undergone liposuction, saying she wasn’t going to hide it.
Speaking about the results on Instagram, she said: ‘As a lot of my followers will know, I was diagnosed with a condition called Lipoedema after appearing on Love Island. Before being on the show my BIGGEST insecurity was my abnormally large legs that were out of proportion to the rest of my body. I didn’t know it was a condition I just thought I had horrible legs and had to get over myself lol.
‘But it wasn’t until I saw the 100’s of messages that were sent to my account while I was away, asking if I had been diagnosed with Lipoedema, once I saw them and Googled the condition, I could have cried with the relief of knowing the reason for why my legs looked the way they did.
‘There were so many nasty comments made about my legs while I was in the villa, and to be completely honest I agreed with most of them ?.. But it only heightened my insecurity even more, and made me feel like it wasn’t my little secret anymore, and I felt like wherever I would go that would be the first thing people would notice about me.
‘Since having my surgery in September to treat the condition, it has been a long and painful recovery, and to be completely honest, I don’t think I quite saw a difference until I saw the picture on the left the other day. I can’t believe how different my legs look today, I can’t even believe they are my legs.’
The former democratic services officer used to go to the gym six times a week, but while she lost weight on the top half of her body, her legs remained the same.
The undiagnosed lipoedema had a big effect on Shaughna’s confidence, with the star previously telling The Sun: ‘I was killing myself doing these workouts. When I went on Love Island, I spent lots of time crying to the therapist.
‘I was surrounded by these lovely looking girls, and I felt like the show’s box-ticking fat girl.’
Since leaving Love Island, Shaughna has become an influencer, repping brands including In The Style and Shein.
