Selena Gomez has called Boris Johnson out on Twitter over his promise to donate the UK’s surplus of coronavirus vaccines to other countries.

The singer called on her followers to urge the Prime Minister to donate more vaccines to poorer countries sooner than he plans, labelling the current amount promised as ‘too little too late’.

She tweeted: ‘.@BorisJohnson, 5million doses by September is too little too late. You promised Britain would donate ALL its surplus vaccines.

‘Ahead of the #G7 Summit in Cornwall, call on the PM to help meet 1B doses.’

The Prime Minister had announced ahead of the G7 summit that the UK would donate 100million doses of the vaccine in the next year.

He promised that five million doses will be donated by the UK before the end of September, with 25million more to be given to poorer countries by the end of the year to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Johnson said: ‘As a result of the success of the UK’s vaccine programme we are now in a position to share some of our surplus doses with those who need them.

‘In doing so we will take a massive step towards beating this pandemic for good.’

The G7 summit is taking place in Carbis Bay in Cornwall and the group of leaders of wealthy nations is expected to pledge to provide a billion doses of the vaccine in a collective effort to end the pandemic.

The USA is set to donate half a billion doses of the Pfizer vaccine, with President of the United States, Joe Biden, adding: ‘The United States is providing these half billion doses with no strings attached. No strings attached.

‘Our vaccine donations don’t include pressure for favours, or potential concessions. We’re doing this to save lives.’
